  • Lauren: I got the Patronus Patrol on the grim patrol // A foe that wanna make sure my casket's closed // Magic critics that say he's "Expelliarmus, hoes" // I'm from under the stairs, what type of facts are those?
  • Sarah: out of control
  • Lauren: It took me a good 10 minutes to come up with those. inspired by this, of course: http://bit.ly/ut131B

“To be honest, I am so accustomed to people wholeheartedly buying into the mythology that until last weekend I stopped noticing the pictures in store windows and the bins of bendable JoePa dolls and the JoePa coffee mugs and the endless tchotchkes that drive the economy of this place. I believed, and continue to believe, that people are more than cardboard, and because of that, I do not believe Paterno deserves our sympathy right now, and, in fact, I walked around State College this weekend supremely pissed off that he did not live up to the standards he’d like us to believe he set for himself. I do believe that we should allow time for more facts to emerge, but I don’t believe, at this point, that he deserved a proper farewell, and I was not alone in that sentiment. And yet when I saw those televised shots of his house on McKee Street, something caught in my throat, a conditioned response to a man I’ve been raised to believe was the moral arbiter of our community.” —Michael Weinreb, who is the one person you should read (outside of the Sara Ganim at the Harrisburg Patriot-News) on Penn State

“Actually, if your family is anything like mine, you’re going to have one tray of delicious sausage stuffing, one tray of stuffing-hold-the-salt-add-dried-cranberries-and-chestnuts for your mom, one tray of all-sausage-hold-the-bread stuffing for your carb-free dad, one tray of nothing for your I-don’t-eat-stuffing-little-sister, and one tray of crusty-bread-with-weird-fruits-whole-grains-and-probably-a-handful-of-quinoa-and-squash-shoved-in-for-good-measure stuffing for your hippie older sister.*” —J. Kenji López-Alt

“

Yes, we make cocktails, but we are also the host of the party. A bartender is part salesman, part showman, and part mixologist. It is our job to be many things to many people, from chaperone to enabler, and the first part of that job is to talk to people. Period.

So I will pass along the advice I received when I started working behind a bar. If you’re just getting started in the beautiful business of working in bars, start with being nice. Then you can make all the cocktails you want.

“College basketball, which starts this week, now consists entirely of, No. 1: the Blue Devils and the Tarheels down together in Carolina; No. 2: wherever it is that John Calipari has taken his portfolio with this year’s bunch of transient freshmen; and No. 3: UConn, if it can keep anybody eligible. Plus, of course, Dick Vitale, screaming at the top of his lungs.” —In With The South, Out With The East, Frank Deford
